Whiplash
Whiplash is a common injury that occurs when the head and neck are suddenly forced forward and backward, placing stress on the muscles, ligaments, joints, and other soft tissues of the cervical spine. Motor vehicle accidents are one of the most common causes, although whiplash can also result from sports injuries, falls, and other traumatic events.
Symptoms do not always appear immediately following an accident. Many individuals experience increasing discomfort over the following hours or days, including neck pain, stiffness, headaches, reduced mobility, shoulder tension, and muscle soreness.
Early evaluation is important to identify injuries and develop an appropriate treatment strategy. Addressing symptoms promptly may help reduce the likelihood of ongoing discomfort and movement limitations.
Our chiropractic team focuses on restoring mobility, reducing mechanical stress, and supporting the body's natural recovery process through individualized care plans designed around each patient's injuries and goals.

How We Treat Whiplash in Newark, DE
Chiropractic care is one of the most effective treatments for whiplash. Chiropractic works to correct structural imbalances through chiropractic adjustments and therapeutic exercises that improve range of motion and reduce pain. A chiropractor can identify the underlying cause of whiplash and prescribe the best treatment options based on each patient's needs.
Comprehensive Consultation and Exam
A comprehensive consultation and exam for whiplash are essential in determining the extent of the injury and the best course of treatment. During the consultation, we would take a thorough medical history, asking questions about the cause of the injury and the symptoms the patient is experiencing. This information is crucial in developing an individualized treatment plan. The physical examination would include a thorough assessment of the patient's neck and back and any other areas the injury may have impacted.
Specific Chiropractic Care
As a chiropractor, we understand that whiplash is a common injury resulting from a sudden, forceful neck movement. This type of injury can cause various symptoms, including neck pain, headaches, dizziness, and even cognitive difficulties.
Specific chiropractic care for a whiplash injury may include spinal adjustments, also known as manipulations, to help realign the vertebrae and relieve pressure on the nerves. These adjustments are gentle and tailored to meet each patient's specific needs. In addition to adjustments, we may also recommend physical therapy exercises and other complementary therapies.
Massage Therapy and Soft Tissue Work
Massage therapy and soft tissue work are commonly used to help treat a whiplash injury, as they can help relieve pain, improve range of motion, and promote healing. Massage therapy is a manual therapy that involves the manipulation of soft tissue, including muscles, tendons, and ligaments, to improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and relieve tension.
In the case of a whiplash injury, massage therapy and soft tissue work can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation by promoting blood flow and releasing tightness in the neck and upper back muscles. Improving circulation and reducing muscle tension can help speed up the healing process and improve the patient's range of motion.
Deep Tissue Laser
Deep tissue laser therapy is a cutting-edge medical technology that can help treat various conditions, including whiplash injuries. Whiplash is a common injury when the neck rapidly jerks forward and backward, causing damage to the muscles, ligaments, and tendons.
Deep tissue laser therapy uses a low-level laser to penetrate deep into the tissue, promoting cellular repair and reducing inflammation. This helps relieve pain, improve range of motion, and speed up healing. The therapy is non-invasive, and patients typically experience little to no discomfort during the procedure.
Therapeutic Exercise
The neck muscles, ligaments, and tendons are often damaged during a whiplash injury, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Therapeutic exercise can help improve these symptoms by strengthening the neck muscles and increasing flexibility in the affected area. The exercises prescribed by a therapist will vary depending on the patient's specific needs. Some common exercises for whiplash may include neck strengthening exercises, stretches for the neck and upper back, and activities to improve range of motion.

Dr South is very professional and sincerely cares about his patients. He has eliminated my migraines and continues to improve issues with my neck and back. I had an elderly dog who could hardly walk and I took him to the vet three times in two weeks. They gave me prescriptions that were not helping, then recommended a chiropractor. I was surprised they recommended Dr South, already my chiropractor! One visit and he was walking pretty normal. After the second visit he was running and playing like a puppy. We had another three years of quality life thanks to Dr South. I'm so grateful to have him in my life!

Common Symptoms of Whiplash in Newark, DE
Concussion
A concussion is a traumatic brain injury when the brain is shaken or jolted inside the skull causing various symptoms, including headache, nausea, dizziness, confusion, and memory loss. A blow to the head often causes concussions, but they can also occur when the head and neck are rapidly accelerated or decelerated, such as in a car accident. In the context of a whiplash injury, a concussion may occur if the head is jerked forward and backward with enough force to cause damage to the brain.
Back Pain
Whiplash can cause back pain because it affects the muscles, ligaments, and tendons in the neck, back, and torso. When the neck is rapidly jerked forward and backward during a whiplash injury, these tissues can become strained or torn, leading to pain and discomfort in the back. Chiropractic care can be an effective treatment for back pain caused by whiplash. Chiropractors specialize in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions, including back pain.
Shoulder Pain
Whiplash can cause pain in the shoulder because of the way it affects the neck and upper body. When the neck is rapidly jerked forward and backward during a whiplash injury, the muscles, ligaments, and tendons in the neck and shoulder can become damaged. This can result in pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility in the affected area. Shoulder pain is a common whiplash symptom because a network of muscles, tendons, and ligaments connects the neck and shoulder.
Neck Pain
Neck pain is a common symptom of a whiplash injury. The pain associated with whiplash can range from mild to severe and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as headache, dizziness, and fatigue. The severity of the pain may not always correlate with the severity of the injury, and some people may experience long-term neck pain even after the initial injury has healed. Treatment for neck pain resulting from a whiplash injury may include chiropractic care and therapeutic exercise.
Headaches
A whiplash headache is often a dull, aching pain at the base of the skull or in the temples. The pain may be worse in the morning and accompanied by neck pain and stiffness. Sometimes, headaches may persist for weeks or even months after the initial injury.
