Thoracic Spine (Th1-Th12)

Have you experienced pain between your shoulder blades and down to your lower rib cage? Have you ever noticed one shoulder higher than the other, or yourself leaning forward with poor posture? Another problem that may be related is upset stomach, low energy, tired feeling, or not relaxed, or muscle spasms in ribs. Problems in this area of the spine can lead to heart and lung problems often caused by spinal misalignments aka subluxations. These can be resolved by a thorough exam, x-rays adjustments, traction, home exercise, and home traction.

Dr South is very professional and sincerely cares about his patients. He has eliminated my migraines and continues to improve issues with my neck and back. I had an elderly dog who could hardly walk and I took him to the vet three times in two weeks. They gave me prescriptions that were not helping, then recommended a chiropractor. I was surprised they recommended Dr South, already my chiropractor! One visit and he was walking pretty normal. After the second visit he was running and playing like a puppy. We had another three years of quality life thanks to Dr South. I'm so grateful to have him in my life!

Common Causes of Thoracic Pain in Newark, DE

Various treatment approaches can help manage thoracic pain. Every case is different, and a skilled chiropractor will evaluate your specific situation and decide on the most appropriate plan of care. Several methods and therapy options are available, including the following.

Thoracic Subluxation

Subluxation refers to the misalignment of the spinal bones in the thoracic region. When the vertebrae in your mid-back shift out of their proper position, it creates nerve inflammation and pressure that can radiate throughout your upper body. This pressure can interfere with muscle and ligament function and reduce nerve flow to surrounding organs, including the heart and lungs.

Thoracic subluxations are corrected using a combination of traction and spinal adjustments. At Pike Creek Chiropractic, a drop table serves as our primary adjustment tool. This approach allows us to be precise and efficient with each adjustment. We do not need to twist the body around; we can adjust one vertebra at a time in a neutral posture. We also use traction to re-establish normal spinal curves when a subluxation affects an entire thoracic spinal region.

The mid-back and rib cage are the most common areas affected by thoracic subluxation. Misalignments in this region can also lead to digestive issues, respiratory problems, and postural abnormalities such as one shoulder sitting higher than the other or a forward head carriage.

Poor Posture

Poor posture is one of the leading causes of thoracic pain in today's sedentary society. Hours spent hunched over computers, looking down at phones, or sitting in unsupportive chairs place excessive stress on the thoracic spine. Over time, this stress can lead to muscle imbalances, joint dysfunction, and spinal misalignments.

Common postural problems affecting the thoracic spine include rounded shoulders, forward head posture, and increased kyphosis (excessive curvature of the mid-back). These issues not only cause pain between the shoulder blades but can also lead to breathing difficulties, headaches, and reduced mobility.

The good news is that postural problems can be corrected with proper chiropractic care, targeted exercises, and ergonomic adjustments to your daily routine. We work with each patient to develop strategies for maintaining healthy posture throughout the day.

Muscle Strain in the Thoracic Region

Muscle strains in the mid-back often result from overuse, sudden movements, or improper lifting techniques. The muscles between your shoulder blades and along your rib cage are particularly vulnerable to strain from repetitive activities like rowing, swimming, or even prolonged typing.

A muscle strain involves tearing of muscle fibers, which triggers an inflammatory response that creates pain and scar tissue. This can lead to muscle spasms, restricted movement, and referred pain that wraps around your rib cage.

Strains can also be a symptom of underlying subluxation. A misaligned vertebra alters nervous system function, further complicating muscle function in a negative feedback cycle. If left untreated, the body will adapt to this new altered state, making correction more difficult over time.

Rib Joint Dysfunction

Each of your ribs connects to your thoracic spine at two points, forming joints that allow for the expansion and contraction of your rib cage during breathing. When these joints become irritated or fixated, they can cause sharp pain that worsens with deep breaths, coughing, or sneezing.

Rib joint dysfunction often accompanies thoracic subluxations and can be a source of significant discomfort. Patients frequently describe this pain as a stabbing sensation between the shoulder blades or along the side of the rib cage.

Chiropractic adjustments can effectively restore normal motion to these joints, relieving pain and improving respiratory function. Many patients notice immediate improvement in their ability to take deep, comfortable breaths following treatment.

Degenerative Disc Disease in the Thoracic Spine

Degenerative disc disease in the thoracic region is less common than in the cervical or lumbar spine, but it can still occur, particularly as we age. When the discs between your thoracic vertebrae begin to break down, they lose height and hydration, leading to reduced flexibility and increased risk of nerve irritation. While this condition cannot be fully reversed, we can prevent it from progressing with regular chiropractic screenings and appropriate care. Reducing abnormal stress on the affected joints helps them regain as much normal function as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the symptoms of thoracic spine problems?

Common symptoms include pain between the shoulder blades, discomfort that wraps around your rib cage, muscle spasms in the mid-back, one shoulder appearing higher than the other, difficulty standing up straight, fatigue, and in some cases, digestive issues or shortness of breath.

Can thoracic pain affect my breathing?

Yes, thoracic spine dysfunction can absolutely affect your breathing. The nerves that control your diaphragm and intercostal (rib) muscles originate from the thoracic spine. When subluxations are present in this region, they can interfere with nerve signals to these muscles, potentially causing shallow breathing or a feeling of breathlessness.

How is thoracic pain different from neck or low back pain?

While neck pain often radiates into the arms and head, and low back pain typically affects the legs and hips, thoracic pain tends to stay centered in the mid-back area or wrap around the rib cage. Thoracic pain is also more likely to be affected by breathing and may be accompanied by digestive symptoms due to nerve interference with the stomach and other organs.

How long does it take to correct thoracic spine issues?

The timeline varies depending on the severity of the condition, how long it has been present, and how consistently you follow your care plan. Some patients experience significant relief within a few weeks, while more complex cases may require several months of care. Most patients notice improvements in their posture and pain levels within the first few visits.

Can poor posture really cause thoracic pain?

Absolutely. Poor posture is one of the most common causes of thoracic pain. When you sit or stand with rounded shoulders and a forward head position, you place excessive strain on the muscles, ligaments, and joints of your mid-back. Over time, this leads to misalignments, muscle fatigue, and chronic pain. The good news is that postural problems can be corrected with the right care.

When should I see a chiropractor for mid-back pain?

You should seek care if your mid-back pain persists for more than a few days, interferes with your daily activities, affects your breathing, or is accompanied by numbness or tingling in your arms or hands. Even mild, persistent pain is worth addressing, as it often indicates an underlying problem that will worsen over time if left untreated.
